The Shelterguard material, unique to Acorn, is manufactured on site by
coextruding a laminate of 12mm square plastic netting and a tinted polythene
lining. The material has been specifically designed to photodegrade in a two
stage process, with the polythene lining breaking up first, once the tree is
established enough to no longer require the shelter environment, leaving a free
draining netting to continue to provide support and browsing protection.
This two stage design makes Shelterguard more versatile than traditional solid
tubes, with the higher light transmission producing stronger and more balanced
growth.

The Standard Shelterguard has a polythene lining with a minimum life expectancy of 3 to 5 years and a netting with a minimum life expectancy of 5 to 7 years.
Ventilated ShelterguardsTM
The polythene lining on all Shelterguards can be microperforated to provide some ventilation, to reduce humidity and temperature and maintain carbon dioxide levels within the tube. Ventilation is particularly recommended for beech which can suffer in an enclosed tube.
The High Exposure ShelterguardTM
The High Exposure Shelterguard is a version in which the polythene lining will
break-up more rapidly, helping to harden trees on more exposed sites.
The polythene lining is clear and has a minimum life expectancy of only 2 to 3
years, though the netting has a life expectancy of 5 to 7
years.
Alternative Colours
The standard Shelterguard colour is green but we can also manufacture the
material in brown or black to order.
